Display Controllers

Display controllers are the main components in video signal generators, which provide video output to a monitor. They dictate the timing of video signals such as vertical and horizontal synchronised signals, and blanking interval signals. Display controllers are usually integrated into the main computer's central processing unit (CPU) system, while they can also act as coprocessors that control the RAM separately.

What are display controllers used for?

Display controllers have many applications in situations where a video signal is required. This can be in areas as broad-ranging as medical equipment, industrial controls, touch screen monitors, and mobile communication devices.

Types of display controllers

The type of display controller required depends on how complex your needs are.

  • Video shifters are the simplest display controllers, which can be used for low-resolution images.
  • Cathode ray tube controllers (CRTCs) have a wider range of capabilities, from simple to high-definition images.
  • Video interface controllers support still more complex uses, such as character generation.
  • Video coprocessors have their own internal CPU, meaning all the functions of the display are controlled by the display controller.
